Keyboard in Hud

Hey guys..
I'm trying to learn everything about modding.
Because of that i try to build my own Jump-Mod and test everything i want even if it's not related to Jumps! :)
I've seen this hud on some other mods and would like to rebuild something similiar to this.

Is it possible to build it without libcod? Because as far as i know there are no functions like "forwardButtonPressed()" or "backButtonPressed()"
Because i'm new to the whole modding and scripting scene i want to learn everything without libcod first... :D
